Sofi Żezmer examines how language and visible signs create meaning and determine our orientation. The act of marking or naming defines what something is, how it is read, how it is valued and by whom. It defines a sense of belonging and it excludes at the very same time. Unmarked Space refers to those zones of life that elude particular definitions and open up a realm of potentiality, in which meaning has not yet been established.
Żezmer’s work balances on the seam between abstraction and possible narrative interpretations. In her sculptures, installations, photographs and collage works on paper, the artist explores how our shifting focus of attention constantly transforms information. How deeply rooted ways of thinking, formed through cultural and biographical rasters, shape our perception of the world, often revealing the absurd and the surreal in the everyday.
Sofi Żezmer (b. 1959, Łódź, Poland) received her BFA from The Cooper Union in 1986 and her MA in Art History from Hunter College in 1993, both in New York.
